    A good read.
Before Robert Jordan was the first Black Chief Resident of Pediatrics at Rush Presbyterian Hospital of Chicago, the outstanding caring, pediatric physician of 35 years, lived a chaotic turbulent childhood. Marilyn Foster paints an engaging account of Jordan’s childhood to adult coming of age experiences: the roller coaster family situations that include shifting households, adultery, tragedy, poverty and secrets, secrets, secrets all amidst a backdrop of the segregated south and the pre-civil rights Chicago. Foster’s informal style makes Suspenders to Stethoscope an easy read as it puts the reader in the same space with Jordan. The reader becomes captivated by the innocent, emotional and determined Jordan’s frustrations, pain, stumbles and victories.
As the reader approaches Jordan’s later years, Foster connects the dots and lessons learned from Jordan’s stormy childhood to showcase an incredible, outstanding man. Importantly, readers see how Jordan’s kindness, honesty, intellect, faith and good decision-making (especially marrying his lovely Jeanette) were always in him. Foster’s unfolding of these character-building traits and situations reveals how Jordan used them to ultimately create a better life for himself, his family, and health and welfare for the underserved communities.
